A great find for Woodturners

Recently I was on a road trip through southern Oregon to break up my winter fog cabin fever here in Walla Walla. About 35 mile sw of Grant Pass on SR199, near the town of Kirby, OR and I mean in the middle of no where, we came across this oasis of burls. It proper name is Its a Burl, and their web site is  http://www.itsaburl.com/content/welcome. This place has more burls than any where I have ever been. He has several artisan, oddly enough, no turners, that create all the pieces of art seen on the above website and then sell. There were at least 3 gallerys filled with beautiful pieces of finished works, all done and finished to perfection (no chainsaw art here).

I bought a batch of madrona block that were partially air dried and when I got home found them totally checked through. When I called him (Harvey-the owner) he appogized and gave me credit on another black oak burl and shipped it free.  The Manzanita burl I bought was gorgous. We were there early on a Sunday morning and spent an easy 2 hours and I still felt rushed. There must have been at leat a dozen customers milling about when we left. The highway that goes by this place only goes to Crescent City, CA., but somehow people find this place. I can't imagine how busy he must be in the tourist season.

If you are ever in this area and have the time take the detour over and visit this neat little shop. It made my whole week trip worthwhile.

More info on the product Eric von Bargen discussed at the Feb 14 2009 Meeting.

http://www.pcepoxy.com/woodproducts/woodpetrif.asp

I learned about this product from a wood dealer in central Oregon recently.  He uses it to harden up slices of burl.   He sells these over the internet to people for making musical instruments.  So far I have really liked it for spot harding up problem areas of pieces that are end grain, punky, soft or burl. It does not seem to discolor the wood, is water based, orderless and hopefully will not change the way finish takes. I like it much better than the solvent based Minwax product.  As far as availablity I found small 8oz. bottles at Ace Hardware stores. Home Depot sells it online only as do several other resellers. It has only a 2 yr shelf life and cannot be frozen. Try a small bottle for $6 and I think you will like it.
