MID-COLUMBIA WOODTURNERS

MEETING MINUTES

FEBRUARY 9, 2008

The business meeting was conducted by John Tucker, President.

Treasurer's Report (Bill Bair): $1,624 in checking; $22 in petty cash.

Old Business:  Jerry Johnson/Don Gangl reminded everyone that they are available for one-on-one turning instruction.  Don's preference is in the evening.  Need a list of those that are interested and what the interests are.  Contact either one for personalized instruction sessions.

New Business:  Don Gangl has been storing the clubs mini-lathes and club supplies e.g. coffee pot, etc. but needs to have some other club member provide storage space.  Linda Sue offered to store the lathes.  Also noted that club lathes are available to members to rent at $10.00/month.  Jerry Duncan agreed to store the club's supplies.

The Club website has been or will be updated by Webmaster Dave Biancosino.  We will be submitting for the 2008 AAW Website Competition.

A list was passed for those members needing club name tags.  Don and Delores Gangl perform this service for the club on an annual basis.

Announcement (Jerry Johnson) that the annual TriCity Woodcarvers show will be held on March 15th and 16th at the TriTech facility.  Although turned objects will not compete for carving awards, there will be a separate category for their entrance and they will be allowed to compete for "People's Choice" award.

DON GANGL ROSE ENGINE DEMONSTRATION

Don began with a brief overview of rose engine historical description.  Don's rose engine was partially assembled from hardware provided by western Washington builder and from parts he assembled.  The total investment cost for Don's unit is around $800.  Don also provided information regarding suppliers to access for the necessary parts not included with the original kit.

Don's demonstration showed the "rocker" movement and cranking mechanism that produces the patterns.  He also included many suggestions for making your own rose engine and the modifications that he made to his.  It seems that most rose engine enthusiasts make or modify their units.  Plans are available at http://ornamentalturners.org/  Don used blackwood for the demonstration and cautioned that tight grained, dense, unfigured woods provide the best prospects when using rose engines.

His demonstration finished around 3pm, with many members staying longer to get additional information.

Overall an excellent program, well attended, and with a high interest level.
