The business meeting was conducted by John Tucker, Vice President.  He noted that the elections held in November resulted in the following:  John Tucker – President, Gordon Lineau – Vice President, Bill Bair – Treasurer and Ernie Kuhn Secretary.  The AAW has been notified of the results. In addition the chapter information form has also been updated and sent to AAW.

John noted that Tom Stoll and John Clarke had some medical problems; cards were passed around for everyone to sign so we can send them to Tom and John.

A discussion was held on future programs

January

“Selected Short Subjects”:  (a) Wipe on Finishes, (b) Using Super Glue, (c) Jam Chucking, and (d) Shop Tips.

I (JJ) have made a presentation to the Wood Carving club on item (a) so that would be easy.  Ron Gerton uses a lot of super glue and maybe he could do a short segment on that.  I have some things I could prepare on (c).  Maybe we could get a couple of people for (d).

February

Ask Don Gangl to do a demo with the rose-engine lathe and also tips on buffing your turnings.

March

Have panel (Ron Gerton, Don Gangl, and Bob Cutler) discussion on how to market your work.

April or May

Make Frisbees and have a contest for best design and for the one that goes the farthest distance.

Molly Winton???

Other Ideas

How to cut trees for different patterns of grain.

Hands-on tool sharpening.

Making flutes on your turnings (John Barany).

Making natural edge bowls (Gordon Lineau).

Gordon Lineau showed some natural bowls that he recently made, as well as a travel mug.  Jerry Johnson showed a vessel made from a local maple tree.  Ron Gerton showed three exquisite bowls made by Bill Luce.  All were from Monkey Puzzle wood.

Scott Trumbo, President of Serious Toolworks (www.serioustoolworks.com), Tualatin, Oregon was this month's demonstrator.  Scott brought an extensive array of the woodturning tools they manufacture.  Featured is a cam-lock tool handle that accepts (with a variety of collets) various turning tools.  Included were their scrapers which are unique in that their scrapers have straight-shank, rounded ends that also fit into the cam-lock handles. Scott demonstrated the use of their knurling/texturing tools.  The knurling tool has a sliding, locking presentation angle plate that rests on the tool rest and is used to provide a consistent pattern angle.  See below:

Meeting Minutes for Saturday, September 8, 2007

The meeting was held at John Tucker's shop in Kennewick, WA.

Once again, special thanks go to Leona (John's wife) for an outstanding selection of snacks and beverages.

President Dave Pellicer called the meeting to order at 1:10pm.

Treasurer's report: Checking: $1,312 and Petty Cash: $101

Old Business: Subject of club purchase of Videos or DVDs for club library:

Members were asked to submit list of those that were desired to Jerry Johnson or Dave Pellicer.

Older magazines in the club library to be culled and made available (excessed) to membership for next month's meeting.  Any not taken at next month's meeting to be discarded.

No status update available on Jack de Vos:  John Barany has been in contact.  Jack feels not enough time in his schedule next year to make the trek to Kennewick.  John Barany is still negotiating with him to see if he can manage the trip to Kennewick.

New Business:  Nominations for club officers are due at the October meeting since the elections are in November.

Elected positions are:

President

Vice President

Treasurer

Secretary

Members present were encouraged to volunteer for one of the positions or at least, solicit non-present members to volunteer.

Only requirement is that club officers must be members of AAW.

The concept was offered that a club officer position could be a "split" position e.g., two members could share ("job share") the responsibilities of one of the officer's positions if that were more feasible.

Ed Glenn, professional wildlife call turner was the demonstrator for "Building A Segmented Vessel".  He distributed a hand-out at the beginning of his demonstration. The demo began with graph paper being passed out to all members.  Ed explained how to design and lay out a segmented vessel.  The group was divided into teams who then began assembling/gluing individual segments that Ed had pre-cut and brought for the demo.  As each "ring" was assembled and glued to the preceding ring, it was placed on the lathe and turned.  Because of time constraints, the last two rings were glued only.  Linda Sue took them with her to finish the turning and bring the completed vessel back to the next meeting.
